La primera edición sudamericana de esta famosa novela se publicó un año después del lanzamiento original. Según WorldCat, existe una edición mexicana publicada el mismo año. A diferencia de la edición bogotana, la versión mexicana deriva de la traducción al castellano realizada en París en 1852. Este hecho resalta la diversidad de interpretaciones y ediciones que ha tenido la obra en el mundo hispanohablante. La edición sudamericana, por tanto, no solo es una rareza por su antigüedad, sino también por su singularidad en el contexto de las traducciones y publicaciones de esta célebre novela.
