La primera edición sudamericana de esta famosa novela se publicó un año después del lanzamiento original. Según WorldCat, existe una edición mexicana publicada el mismo año. A diferencia de la edición bogotana, la versión mexicana deriva de la traducción al castellano realizada en París en 1852. Este hecho resalta la diversidad de interpretaciones y ediciones que ha tenido la obra en el mundo hispanohablante.
